About the CSS coding of "The Fourth Wall"

CSS-controlled layout: The design of this Web site is notable for the total absence of tables in the HTML code; an external Cascading Style Sheet (or "CSS") controls the layout of this page.

The use of CSS to organize the visible content has helped minimized the HTML code, keeping it at about half of what it would be otherwise--therefore saving bandwidth. Using hidden tables rather than CSS would bloat the code of each page significantly.

If the page were disconnected from its CSS, the page would be altered gracefully and not suffer in the change. The plain-text version has been crafted to display each page in a well-organized, readable fashion.

Tricks with the channel-buttons: The four "channel" buttons at the top of every page, located just below the graphical logo block, are actually the result of two CSS tricks. The buttons are actually text-links, organized as an unordered list but modified to display horizontally--that's the first trick. The second is that, rather than using graphics, the active and hover states of each link change the individual colors of each "button," allowing each button to appear depressed. A non-CSS version would require additional graphics and a chunk of JavaScript, bloating the code of the page beyond the necessary.

Standards compliant: The combination of layout-controlled CSS, standards-compliant XHTML coding, and this level of organization allows the page to become full accessible. For example, this page can be properly read in normal Web browsers, e-book readers, and by the blind.
